About Us

All Children are special, but some are more special

“The Sunflower Special School” is a home for the often ill-treated poor & orphan Challenged Children, where these children’s innocent lives have been provided with a new meaning for their existence. Here they live like the more privileged children without the fear of discrimination and ridicule. Our specially trained staff treats them with utmost care and patience.

Growth &Training: The Special School started with just two children, but has grown in strength gradually with the goodwill & the admiration of parents & public through the years.

At present, the school has strength of 110 students (day &residential). We train about 110 special children, which includes 51 hostel inmates.

Specially Trained Educators from various fields of Disabilities like Mentally Retarded, Blind, Dumb &deaf provide professional training for the development of the young minds with dedication.

Apart from Academic Education we also impart Vocational training to the inmates in various Vocational Courses such as Screen Printing, Book Binding, and Fashion Designing and in making Files, Phenyl, Candles etc.

The specially made Painted Jyoti’s or Pramida’s designed by our students are loved by one and all.

We also provide the facilities of Speech, Physiotherapy, Psyche, Music and Dance Therapies. We encourage students to participate in Sports, Games and Cultural activities to develop their latent talent.

The teachers and other staff members stay together with the students. One Warden and five attendants to look after the basic needs of the children.

Food: - A balanced diet is given to the students as per the suggestions of a dietician.

For effective monitoring, the students with different Disabilities are divided into different categories depending on the degree to which they are affected.

The process of enrolling a child involves an I.Q. Test, the results of which are analyzed by a Special Educator. Also an assessment by a professional Psychologist is done. The Child is kept under observation for two months after which the learning level of the child is decided. Then a Curriculum based on the Child’s intelligence level and the degree of Disability is set as a primary goal. After every 3 months, an assessment is made as per a Check list and the course is reviewed according to the students’ progress.

Behavioural Modification:

The Special children need to be trained in basic needs & habits. Normal habits like going for toilet, bathing, dressing, eating is also very difficult for them.

Our Special Educators train corrective measures to enable them to understand basic needs once they step into our school, over a period of time, depending upon the child’s reciprocation. To train them in basic skills like eating, recognizing a person, which is a continuous process, in order to mix them with main stream children. These Children need to be taught with extreme patience.

Slow learner:

After conducting a GLAD test, a course curriculum is set, based on the syllabus of National Open School (NIOS), Delhi . Our Special educators use specially designed Visual Aids to enhance the students learning abilities. After completion of the academic course the Special Children will appear for an NIOS-annual exam at NIMH centre,Secunderabad.

Integration & Innovation: We integrate these ‘Special Children’ with the Normal students.

Lip Movement: As far as Speech is concerned in the case of Hearing Impaired (Deaf) Children, we follow “Lip Movement” system instead of the ‘Sign Language’ so as to enable them to get mixed up with the Normal in the Main Stream and converse with them freely without any hesitation.

The “Integrated System” enables the Disabled forget their Disabilities and develop Self-Confidence.
