For effective monitoring, the students with different Disabilities are divided into different categories depending on the degree to which they are affected.

The process of enrolling a child involves an I.Q. Test, the results of which are analyzed by a Special Educator. Also an assessment by a professional Psychologist is done. The Child is kept under observation for two months after which the learning level of the child is decided. Then a Curriculum based on the Child’s intelligence level and the degree of Disability is set as a primary goal. After every 3 months, an assessment is made as per a Check list and the course is reviewed according to the students’ progress.

Behavioural Modification:

The Special children need to be trained in basic needs & habits. Normal habits like going for toilet, bathing, dressing, eating is also very difficult for them.

Our Special Educators train corrective measures to enable them to understand basic needs once they step into our school, over a period of time, depending upon the child’s reciprocation. To train them in basic skills like eating, recognizing a person, which is a continuous process, in order to mix them with main stream children. These Children need to be taught with extreme patience.

Slow learner:

After conducting a GLAD test, a course curriculum is set, based on the syllabus of National Open School (NIOS), Delhi . Our Special educators use specially designed Visual Aids to enhance the students learning abilities. After completion of the academic course the Special Children will appear for an NIOS-annual exam at NIMH centre,Secunderabad.

Integration & Innovation: We integrate these ‘Special Children’ with the Normal students.

Lip Movement: As far as Speech is concerned in the case of Hearing Impaired (Deaf) Children, we follow “Lip Movement” system instead of the ‘Sign Language’ so as to enable them to get mixed up with the Normal in the Main Stream and converse with them freely without any hesitation.

The “Integrated System” enables the Disabled forget their Disabilities and develop Self-Confidence.

Who we are

A legacy of ‘Voluntary Service’ is an adornment of Mrs. M. Nagaraja Kumari, Founder & Secretary. She hails from a family very well known for its social service with Philanthropic attitude.

With this inheritance she had chosen to serve the ‘Special Children’ . Enjoying the spirit of this kind of service in the school prompted her to serve the Poor and Disabled at slums and villages.
Realizing it as a Vocation, she was determined to devote the whole of her time on building a lasting relationship with the mentally & physically challenged poor & orphan children of all religions by giving birth to a ‘Mission’ to fulfill her ‘Vision’.

Community service is the Heritage of Mr. Ranjan, Founder President. His grand father and father used to provide the poor with Food, Medical Aid and Education. Mr.Ranjan, who served in a PSU as Class 1 Officer for 23 years, has a sense of Commitment, Dedication and Sacrifice to serve the under privileged communities and to ensure that people do not die on the streets.
Rising to the occasion, both have been work for about 12 to 14 hours a day in fulfillment of their aims and objectives.

Reality

Poverty is rampant in our backward villages in the District of Visakhapatnam. Disparity between the rich and the poor is enormous in these villages. Theses village have the largest number of bonded and child labourers. These poor people lead a hand- to- mouth life by earning low daily wages.

Health education is to be necessarily imparted . Most of the people suffer from congenital diseases even without knowing about them. So mortality rate in this project area and adjacent villages is far more than in advanced Cities. The nearest full pledged hospital is sometimes about 25 to 30 kms away and it may be physically impossible to gain entrance into a specialist hospital. Unhygienic conditions and illicit contacts spread communicable diseases like cholera, diarrhea, TB, Jaundice, HIV / Aids . Polio is still prevalent.

These villages have no facilities for poor, destitute and disabled children in the matter of education, health & protection. The women have no alternative other than going for work along with men-folk to augment the sources of income for their families. The lack of proper education added to it, their miserable living conditions and the strenuous labour make the disabled children unwanted in the society as they need more care and do not contribute to the family earnings.

Origin

With an objective to serve the society “The Sun Flower Educational & Charitable Society” was established in 1978 and it acquired its registration in 1982 (as per the Society Act XXI of 1860 of A.P.) . The preamble of our objectives are promoting educational institutions, vocational training centers and residential schools for the welfare of the mentally & physically challenged poor children as well as normal children including orphans, street children, child labourers and the children of economically weaker sections by way of providing the welfare amenities like rehabilitation, health and nutrition in a charitable way.

This Society is a non-profit voluntary organization aimed at serving the mentally & physically challenged poor children along with normal distressed children of this area. Many poor special children along with normal children have been educated by this Society through charity and many social programmes were administered to the under privileged people.

Our Focus

We share the love of God among the poor needy & disabled children and alleviate their problems.

We integrate special children (disabled) with normal students. We follow Lip movement system instead of the ‘Sign Language’ system for the ‘Hearing Impaired’ (Deaf) students to enable their integration with the normal students in the main stream. We are happy to say that our Hearing Impaired children are able to converse with normal children freely. Also we ensure that the mentally retarded and slow learners are also assimilated with the normal students. Thus the ‘Integrated System’ enables the disabled to forget their disabilities and develop self confidence.

On 3rd December every year our children observe ‘World Disabled Day’ by installing exhibition stalls and participating in cultural activities. They participated in the ‘Special Olympic Games 2005’ and bagged a good number of prizes. Some of our moderately retarded children have passed the public examinations.

Our charitable society also undertakes various social activities such as free medical camps, health awareness camps, services to people affected by natural calamities, distribution of food items, clothes etc. to poor children in slum areas and de-addiction awareness programs for the benefit and welfare of the community.

When, at the dawn of 26th December 2004, Tsunami played a havoc in the coastal villages of Bay of Bengal in Indian Ocean, our Society formed a relief team. Not only many lives were lost but many people also lost their boats, nets and house hold materials. Further several houses were damaged. In this agonic situation, our relief team visited the affected areas in Krishna District namely Manginaapudi & Tallapalem to share the mournful feelings of the victims and to offer our solace to them with a deep sense of sorrow .We offered rice, clothes and steel vessels directly to the people affected by Tsunami.

We have also conducted AIDS awareness camps, and rallies on several occasions which attracted the attention of our state Hon’ble Chief Minister Dr. Y.S. Rajesekhara Reddy.

Our Vision

A close look at the faces of these children is enough to fathom the hurt and helplessness in their eyes and the fact that they had undergone a troubled childhood due to lack of nutritional needs.

They come from different villages and slums and with diverse backgrounds, but most of them seem to have one thing in common i.e., Poverty. Also coupled with negligence and ill-treatment by parents or our Society. What they all need is ‘Love’. Therefore, apart from the family members, the onus now rests on the Community to transform these Special Children who had a troubled childhood into productive citizens with an everlasting smile on their faces

We share a vision of creating a better environment for these children. We are with a strong conviction and unrelenting endeavour to move towards a common Dream of filling love and affection into the lives of the Mentally and Physically Challenged.

Keeping this vision in the action plan, we have been campaigning continuously in the surrounding urban slum and rural areas in order to identify the neglected and uncared for Disabled children, who make Railway stations, Bus stands and Market places as their homes. We invite them into the lap of the Sunflower Special School and make our best efforts to bring them into mainstream of Life. Special training programs have been designed & planned suitably to mould them their individual skills and capabilities.
